Key Terms

Review the following list of key terms:

  • email body— The section of an email message that includes the text of the message.

  • email header— The preliminary section of an email message, consisting of informational fields and associated values.

  • email reader— A client email application that is responsible for sending mail, retrieving mail, and managing the user interface through which the user interacts with the mail system.

  • email virus— A software virus propagated as an attachment to an email message.

  • Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP)— An enhanced mail retrieval protocol that provides several features not available with POP. For instance, you can access mail messages without first downloading the messages from the server.

  • mailbox— A location on an email server where incoming messages are stored for a user.

  • Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions (MIME)— An email format that extends the capabilities of Internet mail.

  • Pine— A terminal-based email reader program that runs on a Unix computer.

  • Post Office Protocol (POP)— A popular mail retrieval protocol used on the Internet. POP enables the user to log on to an email server and download or delete waiting messages.

  • Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP)— A protocol used for sending mail on TCP/IP networks.
