Looking at Your Site

The first thing you should do in order to adapt your site for handheld screens is look at it with your own telephone (and anyone else's you can lay your hands on).

To look at your site

1.
Open your own telephone and view your site. Use any other handhelds you have (including PDAs and smart phones) to view your site.

2.
Download the latest version of Opera (http://www.opera.com). Open your site and then choose View > Small Screen. Opera will show you what users of its Opera for Mobile browsers (installed on millions of handheld devices) are seeing.

3.
Download Openwave's Phone Simulator (http://developer.openwave.com). Openwave's browsers are on about 50% of the world's handheld devices.

4.
Download the Nokia simulators (http://www.forum.nokia.com). Nokia browsers are also very popular.

5.
Download simulators from Palm, Blackberry, and other manufacturers of handheld devices.

Tips

  • Unfortunately, most simulatorswith Opera being the notable exceptionrun only on Windows system software.

  • Opera's desktop browsers emulate Opera's Mobile browser when you choose View > Small Screen. If your page has a handheld style sheet, Opera will use that. If your page does not have an associated handheld style sheet, Opera will use its proprietary Small Screen Rendering (SSR) technology to adapt your pages to the small screen on the fly.
